Yosemite National Park

Visited: August 2024

After the long drive from San Francisco, we were tired and ready to just arrive and get on with it.

Then we pulled up at Tunnel View.

The moment we stepped out of the car, everything changed. The valley opened up, the astonishing El Capitan to the left, Half Dome standing proudly in the distance – and it didn’t feel real. It looked like a desktop screensaver.

We’d never seen a landscape like it. That was the moment the 63 National Parks challenge stopped being an idea and became a mission.

Biggest “Wow” Moment: Tunnel View
Hike Highlight: Tuolumne Grove
Would We Go Back?: 1000% Yes

The Road to 100 Countries

In 2022, we booked a trip to New York.
It wasn’t the start of a master plan. It wasn’t the first step in a grand travel strategy.

It was just a trip.

We didn’t see ourselves as “travellers”. We weren’t chasing passport stamps or counting continents. We just wanted to explore somewhere new.

But something shifted.

After New York, we booked another trip.
Then another. Then suddenly we were the couple scrolling flight deals at midnight and planning long weekends around public holidays.

At some point, we realised, this wasn’t a phase, it had become a part of who we are.

So, we asked ourselves the dangerous question: “How far could we take this?”

At first, we said every country in the world.

Then we did the maths, and unless one of us wins the lottery, quits work and acquires the ability to teleport, visiting 195 countries felt slightly unrealistic.

So, we chose a number that felt bold, exciting and just about possible:

100 Countries

Big enough to stretch us.
Realistic enough to chase
Ridiculous enough to make it exciting.

We had one rule though…

Not individually.
Together.

We both have places we visited before we met – but they don’t count. If we didn’t experience it side by side, it doesn’t make the list.

Because this challenge isn’t about numbers.

It’s about building a shared map of memories.

We’re 14 down.
86 to go.
